Slovenian Street Couture Comes to NYC

A new wave of Slovenian street style is coming to NYC this week as FIRMA by Sanja Grcić opens its chic pop-up installation at the Roger Smith Hotel on Thursday, January 6th at 6pm.

Inspired by a mix of 'urban bohemian' and 'post-communist global' attitudes, FIRMA's latest collection celebrates what the designer refers to as 'street couture' with clever hand-crafted detailing and a 'sporty touch'. I find the saturation of the hues in the above pieces to be totally alluring and illustrative of the fact that Eastern Europeans really know how to inject moody winter days with rich, sumptuous color. FIRMA designs are sexy and classic, though multifunctional in purpose and made in limited quantities at fair wages in Slovenia.

I have been wanting to visit the countryside in Slovenia for some time, and perhaps this will finally happen in the not too distant future as I drive my family from Bulgaria to Italy, with an exploratory stopover in the stunning capital city of Ljubljana.

SOTO, the Society of Slovenian fashion and textile design, just might lure me there.

is one of my favorite studies in traditional costuming in urban life.
