NYFW: Suno Spring 2011 Does Africa Right
So I know that the buzz this fashion week is the revamp of Edun and their hot new collection for the enlightened set, but I have to say that I am still partial to Suno New York's ability to bring it home when it comes to doing work in and with Africa. Call me old-fashioned, but I like to see the artisans who produce the work also express their cultural roots and textiles in the garments they craft and share with the world. I understand the very real challenges of sourcing a label once it has gone big time with the investment of global movers and shakers, but let's not forget those brave individuals like Suno's founder, Max Osterweis and lead designer, Erin Beatty, who are able to sustainably rock our world with Kenyan-produced fashion that aids our imaginations as well.
