A Slow Fashion Collection Inspired by UC Berkeley's Botanical Specimens

"Regenerative design nurtures awareness, accountability and responsibility in our approach to clothing through the use of plant-based dyes and fibers, and reclaimed textiles. The 2011 UC Botanical Garden at Berkeley, Green Gala Fashion Show, curated by the Permacouture Institute, features talented designers with sustainable methods who are designing unique pieces inspired from the Garden’s global plant collection.” - via the Permacouture Institute

Fashioning Self and the Environment Gifts: 'The Handbook of Natural Plant Dyes' Book by Sasha Duerr

Adie + George AW 2011 collection

I am very excited to announce that we will be giving away five copies of Sasha Duerr's gorgeous new book, The Handbook of Natural Plant Dyes, published by Timber Press, at the 'Fashioning Self and the Environment' event at Brooklyn's Textile Arts Center on Friday, April 22, from 6 to 9pm.

As the founder of the Permacouture Institute and a co-designer for Adie + George, Sasha is at the forefront of the slow fashion movement as well as being an advocate for and expert on natural plant dyes and sustainable textiles. This handbook is not only visually inspirational but a unique reference guide to projects for both the novice and expert dye enthusiast. You can read my review of this book on EcoSalon.

Please join us at the Textile Arts Center for this art/fashion Earth Day celebration and the opportunity to learn more about slow fashion goodness and local environmental outreach. You just might be one of the lucky five guests taking Sasha's book home for the evening.

Review of Sasha Duerr's Handbook of Natural Plant Dyes

image via Adie + George

Please enjoy my review of Sasha Duerr's amazing new book, The Handbook of Natural Plant Dyes, on EcoSalon. Here is an excerpt from my exclusive interview:

"Sasha is one of the leading experts on natural plant dyes and home-brewed recipes for creating customized color palettes that also touch on eco-literacy and bio-regional awareness. Identifying non-toxic dye materials that reside in your own kitchen, garden, or urban plot goes hand in hand with all of the focus and research one might put into shopping for and preparing organic foods. This is the first book that really highlights why fashion and food are intertwined, and why we can no longer afford to view textiles and clothing as something other than the underlying fiber of our everyday lives and shared communities."

Adie + George 100% West Coast Knitwear

And as if the Mr. Larkin A/W 2010 Collection was not gorgeous enough, here are several images from the debut of Adie + George, adoringly named after Sasha Duerr's grandmother and Casey Larkin's grandfather. A 100% local fiber knitwear line aka a new spin on northern California slow design also serving as eco-luxurious canvases for rich natural dyes.

Photo shoot location: Slide Ranch, West Marin, California. The eco-model featured is none other than the Bay Area's own Ariel Clay.
