How to buy a engagement ring

The best way to buy her an engagement ring she'll love is to let her pick it out herself. She'll wear this ring every day. It must feel good on her finger and it must suit her lifestyle. Sometimes it takes trying on many, many diamond shapes and setting styles to determine which ring is truly "best." But you still want to go it alone, don't you? Maybe because you want to surprise her with the engagement ring, or because you don't want her to be involved with pricing and payment issues. That's fine--if you put some thought into it you can buy an engagement ring that she'll love almost as much as she loves you
Paying attention to her jewelry likes and dislikes is the first big step towards finding her the perfect engagement ring:

Still want to go it alone?

If you still want to go it alone and surprise her or perhaps you don't want her to be involved with pricing and payment issues, follow these simple rules (don't worry there are only 5!) and you will buy an engagement ring she will love almost as much as she loves you!
What metal color does she wear now? Most women have a definite preference. If she loves white gold or platinum, don't even look at a diamond or other stone mounted in a yellow gold ring setting.
What style of jewelry does she wear now? Is it contemporary-looking, with bold styling? Does she prefer vintage looking rings? Or would you say that the jewelry she wears is classic, resembling those timeless pieces that never go out of style?
The best indication of her tastes is the jewelry she wears all the time, not items she only wears occasionally, because it's the full-timers that she's most comfortable with.

Find Out Her Ring Size!

To ensure you buy the perfect engagement ring you will need to know the ring size of your bride to be.
You could do this by getting hold of a ring she already wears on the correct finger or asking a friend or family member to get one for you.  You will only need to have the ring long enough for it to be sized.
If you get help from someone else you will need to swear them to secrecy and of course make sure the ring is put back before she notices it is gone!

Decide your budget
There is a widely used budget rule for purchasing an engagement ring. Most people save an amount equal to a two-month’s salary for an engagement ring. Obviously, you do not need to follow this rule exactly. If you find a perfect ring that is less than your two-month’s salary, save the difference for future needs. At the same time, if the engagement ring turns out to be bit more expensive than your budget but you know that it’s the perfect ring for your fiancĂ©, you should consider chipping in a little more for the ring. As soon as you make the decision on a ring, try to negotiate with the sales person. Buying an engagement ring is no different than buying any other item. You can always negotiate the price. Do not feel intimidated when you walk into a fabulous jewelry store. When you decide to buy the engagement ring, try to talk the price down to about half the asking price. Remember that jewelry salesmen are no different than any other salesmen in the world.

Find a good and trustworthy jewelry store
The best way to find a good jewelry store is to consult with friends and relatives who have recently gotten married. Because they have gone through the process of purchasing an engagement ring themselves, they should be able to give you suggestions on where to buy the ring. You can also try the well known name brands but don’t feel compelled to buy from these stores. There are many good and trustworthy jewelry stores out there if you spend some time looking for them.

Choose a good setting
Before choosing the setting of the engagement ring, you need to select the type of metal for your ring. Most people choose platinum or gold for their engagement rings. However, people also use other metals such as white gold, titanium, silver etc. If you are not sure about the setting style your fiancée likes, you may want to ask their close friend or relative for suggestions. There are many different settings to pick such as cluster, bar, prong-solitaire, gypsy, pave setting, etc. It is usually easier to pick out the setting if you have already chosen the type of stone.

Make the deal
After you have gone through all these steps, pay the bill and get the engagement ring to propose to your beloved one. Although the engagement ring should last forever, keep the receipt just in case you need to bring it back to the jewelry store for any reason.
