Istanbul Fashion Report: Galata and Beyond

It is not easy to describe the atmosphere as one walks the backstreets of Beyoğlu's Galata at dusk. Istanbul completely seduced me this time around, and I now want to know even more about Turkey's rich culture, architectural history, and textile traditions. How fortunate I am to be only one hour away from Sofia by plane. Visits here could be my new addiction.
One-of-a-kind felt creations featured at Laundromat, a must-visit shop co-owned by Turkish designers Öykü Thurston and Yasemin Özeri.
Natural fiber offerings and knits on display at Laundromat

Dear friends Sena and Seray of BOA Studio took me for a pre-dinner tour of Galata's neighborhood and were so gracious about pointing out designer boutiques like Laundromat, just down the street from Atelier 55, the very chic store and art cafe that showcases BOA's latest designs.
Not sure who designed this great clutch at Laundromat, but it is pretty sleek.

It was a such a treat to finally meet face to face with BOA Studio and get a better sense of what inspires and challenges them as one of the one of the most innovative sustainable fashion labels on the shores of the Bosphorus. I have previously written about their graphically lyrical, organic 'pamuk' (cotton) collections, but as of 2011, BOA will be transitioning to working with superfine bamboo for their tees and ready-to-wear designs. Sena is even growing bamboo in her own garden as a way to study the crop's rapid growth rate and limited water consumption.
How lucky was I to receive this gorgeous bamboo tee with one of Sena's original hand-drawn illustrations? Paired with the new BOA organic cotton black mini-skirt that I found at Atelier 55, I am totally set for upcoming travels during 2011.

Atelier 55's chic and well-edited boutique is the only place in Istanbul where you can find names such as David Koma, Avsh Alom Gur, Charlotte Olympia, Umit Benan, Bora Aksu, BOA Studio, and Notting Hill Design. This must-visit store also sells stylish clothing and accessories under its own eponymous label. Jewelry by celebrated Turkish designers such as Kismet and decorative ceramics and paintings by local artists adds the perfect flair to this exquisitely curated space.

Of course, one of the most satisfying things to do in Istanbul is to stroll for hours in order to soak up the local colors, textures, and sounds of this incredibly dynamic and rapidly growing city. I spent a whole day simply letting my eyes wander over the surfaces, patterns, and textures of objects along my pathway.

It is so easy to have a love affair with a place that is not afraid to stand apart from the norm while also serving as a gateway to East/West customs, traditions, and aesthetic phenomena.

My next trip to Turkey will hopefully include a visit the the Eastern part of the country as well as a visit with Catherine Bayar of BazaarBayar.

BOA Studio's hand drawn illustrations on organic pamuk (cotton)

I am very excited to be off to Istanbul tomorrow for new textile research projects as well as a visit with BOA Studio and Atelier 55. The weather has turned gorgeous in this part of the world, so the timing is perfect for this long overdue pilgrimage. Stay tuned for more details on what I discover and soak up in one of the most magical and inviting cities on the planet.

BOA Studio Totally Illustrates Summer

I am totally smitten, yet again, with BOA Studio's latest offerings. This Istanbul-based eco fashion label remains true to the source with their commitment to organic 'pamuk' (cotton) and their whimsical hand-drawn illustrations.

BOA's Sena Çevik and Seray Cengiz have spelled out Summer 2010 chic with these 'Mr. Whale, Maiden Tower, Princess, and Sea Monster' silhouettes.

Organic graphics and cut-outs never looked so fresh, but then again, with the streets of Istanbul as your backdrop and source of inspiration, life is magically unfolding with every twist and turn. Read more about BOA Studio in their recent interview with G Living.

Cuval's Burlap Totes and Satchels

I am planning a family (work) holiday in Istanbul during the month of March, and I am very excited to finally meet the clever design duo at BOA Studio during this time. Their recent collaborations with Çuval (a.k.a Chu.va.l) studio is a resourceful partnership and a smart collaboration that creatively (re)uses bits of BOA's studio fabric left-overs and quality burlap for Cuval's eco chic totes and satchels.

"Two like-minded friends, Ayşe & Açelya at Çuval, have re-created a "bohça" in Turkish, or "rag bag" in English (not a perfect translation as the original name refers to a bag used by village women and gypsies to travel about). Regardless, these super cute burlap bags are perfect for marketing outings or carefree days exploring local bazaars and backstreets while on holiday abroad.

'Organic Symphony' by BOA Studio

I so love these latest graphic expressions by Istanbul-based eco-fashion designers Sena Çevik and Seray Cengiz of BOA Studio. I have been a fan of BOA for quite some time and consider myself to be a neighbor of sorts given all of the time that I now spend in Sofia, Bulgaria. Their latest 'Organic Symphony' collection melds the best of organic 'pamuk' (cotton) with signature doodles and enviro-art whimsy. Each piece is a unique work of art that utilizes the best organic materials as a fashionable canvas.

*If you happen to be in colorful Istanbul this weekend, check out BOA Studio's 'Organic Symphony' Winter 2010 collection and their new project 'Boa Re-cycled' at Babylon Lounge in Istanbul on November 21st/22nd.

BOA Studio's Organic Pamuk for Summer

Now that the solstice has officially arrived, there is no better way to celebrate the chic rays of summer than with some super cool organic 'pamuk' (cotton) by BOA Studio. Istanbul-based designers Sena Çevik and Seray Cengiz call their latest collection, MOTHER EARTH, FATHER MOON or DOĞA ANA, AY BABA. And as usual, their original hand-drawn illustrations truly highlight the magic of their sustainable style whimsy. I so love it when real green fashion looks and feels like art that is irresistibly collectible.
